Short-term painting work in Puget Sound

Interior and exterior. What the work involves, what employers should say in a post, and what workers should list in a profile.

What is short-term painting work?

Painting is preparing and coating surfaces, inside and out, and most of the skill and time is in the preparation: patching, sanding, masking and priming.

What the work involves

Painters prep surfaces, mask and protect, prime and apply finish coats by brush, roller or spray. Interior work is steady and year-round; exterior work depends on dry, mild weather, which in Puget Sound means planning around the wet season.

Short-term painting jobs range from a single room to a day of cutting in on a larger project, to exterior prep and priming ahead of a crew.

Typical short-term jobs

  • Paint one or more rooms, including ceilings and trim
  • Cut in and roll on a larger interior job
  • Prep, scrape and prime an exterior section
  • Spray doors, cabinets or trim in a shop
  • Touch up and punch-list paint at the end of a project

What employers should specify

  • Interior or exterior, rooms or square footage, and ceiling heights
  • What prep is included (patching, sanding, caulking, priming)
  • Who buys the paint and supplies, and the colors and sheen
  • Whether furniture will be moved and floors protected
  • Spray or brush and roll, and any ladders or lifts on site
  • The age of the building, because of older paint (see safety)

What workers should list in their profile

  • Interior, exterior or both, and whether you spray
  • Prep skills such as patching, caulking and sanding
  • Whether you bring your own brushes, rollers, sprayers and drop cloths
  • Ladder and scaffold comfort
  • Your ZIP code and how far you will travel

Safety and licensing notes

General information only

These notes are general. Rules depend on the project and change over time. Where this page is not certain it says to check with the state or the local building office.

  • Paint disturbed in homes built before 1978 can contain lead. The EPA lead program sets rules for renovation work that disturbs older paint. Check what applies before sanding or scraping.
  • Ventilation and respirators matter with sprays and solvents. The employer provides the working conditions and the worker uses appropriate protection.
  • Ladders and lifts cause falls. Agree before the job who provides what equipment.

Questions about painting on GapCrew

Does the app show the exact address before I confirm a painter?
No. Workers see city, ZIP code and an approximate distance. The exact address is shown to a worker only after you confirm them.
Who buys the paint?
That is arranged between you and the worker. Put it in the job description so everyone answers with the same understanding.
