Glossary
Words used on GapCrew
Short definitions of the terms used on this site and in the app.
- Availability
- The days and hours a worker says they are free. GapCrew matches jobs only against availability, so a worker sees a job only if they are free for each day's hours (a job can run on 1 to 14 days).
- Booking
- A confirmed arrangement between one worker and one employer for one job, on every day of that job. Messaging opens when a booking is confirmed.
- Check-in and check-out
- The worker's recorded start and finish on a job. They create the hours record. A coarse location may be recorded only if the worker gives permission, and it never blocks check-in.
- Confirmed worker
- A worker an employer has chosen from those who responded. Only a confirmed worker sees the exact job address.
- Employer
- A person or business that posts a job on GapCrew and pays the worker directly for the work.
- Final clean
- A detailed clean at the end of a project, before handover or inspection. See the cleanup page.
- Finish carpentry
- Visible, precise woodwork such as trim, doors, stairs and built-ins, as opposed to structural rough carpentry.
- GapCrew
- An online marketplace in Washington's Puget Sound region where workers in construction trades and labor say when they are free and employers post short-term jobs. It is not a staffing agency and is not the employer of any worker.
- Hot work
- Work that creates sparks, flame or heat, such as welding or cutting, which carries a fire risk and needs precautions.
- Hours correction
- A suggested change to a recorded check-in or check-out time. One person proposes it, the other confirms it, and the original record is kept. A GapCrew administrator settles any disagreement.
- ID reviewed
- A planned badge meaning a GapCrew administrator looked at an identity document on a stated date. ID review is not available yet, so no profile shows it.
- Independent contractor
- A general term for someone who offers services on their own account. Whether a person is an independent contractor or an employed worker is decided by law and the facts, not by a label. See the Washington overview.
- Job board
- A site where businesses publish openings and candidates apply. See the comparison guide.
- Job post
- An employer's listing on GapCrew, with a trade, description, the day or days (1 to 14), start and end time, pay per hour, number of workers and site location. Pay must be at least Washington's minimum wage for the job's dates.
- L&I
- The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, which oversees workplace safety, workers' compensation and contractor registration.
- Main trade
- The one trade a worker marks as their primary trade. Jobs appear in any trade a worker holds.
- Marketplace
- A platform where one side offers their time and the other posts work, and each chooses the other. The platform provides the tools and is not a party to the arrangement.
- Masked name
- A worker's name shown to employers as first name and last initial before a booking is confirmed. Employers' business names are shown.
- Pay per hour
- The hourly rate an employer states in a job post and pays the worker directly. Wages never pass through GapCrew.
- Puget Sound region
- The area around Puget Sound in western Washington, including Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Everett and the surrounding communities. GapCrew's launch area.
- Punch list
- A final list of small tasks to complete at the end of a project.
- Rough carpentry
- Structural or hidden woodwork such as framing, decking and forms, as opposed to finish carpentry.
- Staffing agency
- A firm that recruits people and, in the usual arrangement, employs them and bills the business that uses them. GapCrew is not a staffing agency.
- Travel distance
- How far a worker is willing to go for a job, from 1 to 50 miles, with a default of 25. It is measured in a straight line between ZIP code centers. A job reaches a worker only within their own travel distance.
- WA license found in snapshot
- A planned badge meaning the registration number a worker gave was found in a saved copy of Washington public records on a stated date. License checks are not available yet, so no profile shows it. The official L&I record is the authority.
- ZIP code center
- The center point of a ZIP code. GapCrew uses it, not a street address, to work out distance between a worker and a job.
