What to put in a job post
A good GapCrew job post names the trade, describes the tasks, gives the day or days and exact hours, states pay per hour and the number of workers, and gives the site ZIP code, with the street address entered privately.
Key points
- Fields: trade, description, the day or days (1 to 14), start and end time, pay per hour, workers needed, site address and site ZIP code.
- If the end time is earlier than the start time, that day's work ends the next morning.
- Pay must be at least Washington's minimum wage for the job's dates.
- The street address is private until you confirm a worker.
The fields
- Trade. Pick the one that fits the main work. If you need two different skills, post two jobs.
- Description. Say what the work is. Keep the street address out of it.
- Days, start and end time. One day, or several days (1 to 14 within 31 days), each with its start and end time. These must be the real hours, because workers respond only when they are free for each day's hours. The nights between days do not need to be free.
- Pay per hour. The rate you will pay the worker directly. It must be at least Washington's minimum wage for the job's dates.
- Workers needed. The number of people. You confirm each one.
- Site address and ZIP code. The ZIP code is used to work out distance. The address stays private until a worker is confirmed.
Writing a description that works
A short description with specifics outperforms a long one with vague claims. State the tasks in order of importance, the physical demands, the tools you supply and the tools you expect, and anything unusual about the site. Mention if the building is older or occupied, and what dust, noise or hours rules apply.
- Say what will be finished by the end of the day.
- Say who the worker takes direction from on site.
- Say where to park and where to arrive, without giving the street address.
- Say what protective gear you will provide.
Pay
You set the hourly pay, and you pay the worker directly. Pay must be at least Washington's minimum wage for the job's dates, and the app will not post a job with a lower rate. Some cities, such as Seattle and Renton, have a higher minimum wage. If the pay is below the city's rate, the app warns you so you can check which rate applies to you. GapCrew is free for employers at launch and takes no card payments. Beyond the minimum, do not rely on the app to decide a fair rate. Think about the trade, the conditions and what you would want if you were the one responding.
Save a draft, then post
You can save a job as a draft and finish it later, then post it when it is right. While a job is open you can edit it. Once a worker is confirmed, the details are fixed so that nobody is surprised.
