Short-term work in Tacoma

Tacoma is Pierce County's largest city, a port city with historic neighborhoods and an industrial waterfront, where short-term trades work combines older-home renovation with fabrication and port-adjacent industry.

About the area

Tacoma has some of the Sound's oldest and most characterful housing, particularly in the Stadium District and the North End. Older houses mean steady repair work: carpentry, paint, plaster and drywall patching, porch rebuilds and yard clean-up.

The Port of Tacoma and the Tideflats area bring industrial work, including fabrication, warehouses and marine-adjacent jobs. Welding and general labor fit well there. Hilltop and downtown are seeing building and renovation as well.

Kinds of short-term work that fit here

  • Porch, stair and deck rebuilds
  • Welding and fabrication near the port and industrial areas
  • Yard clean-up, hauling and general labor
  • Move-out and renovation clean-up

Getting around

I-5 is the main spine, with SR 16 running west to Gig Harbor and Kitsap over the Narrows Bridge, which is tolled, and SR 509 and SR 167 serving the port and the valley. Peak traffic on I-5 north toward Seattle is heavy, but many Tacoma jobs are local.

Sounder commuter rail links Tacoma with Seattle at commute times, but trade work usually starts earlier than transit does, so most workers drive.

How GapCrew works in Tacoma

A job is placed by ZIP code, and a worker sees it if they hold the trade, they are free for each day's hours and the job falls within their own travel distance (default 25 miles, up to 50). Employers can narrow the list of workers they browse and invite. Employers see city, ZIP code and an approximate distance, and the exact address is shared only with confirmed workers. Tacoma and much of Pierce County use ZIP codes beginning with 984.

GapCrew is preparing to open in the Puget Sound region, so this page does not claim numbers of workers or jobs.

Questions about Tacoma

Do Tacoma jobs show to workers in Lakewood and University Place?
A job shows to workers whose ZIP code and travel distance reach it and who are free for each day's hours. Workers in the surrounding Pierce County communities often fall within the default 25 mile travel distance.
Can I post an older-home repair job?
Yes. Describe what needs repairing, say how old the building is, and make clear that you will not ask anyone to disturb suspect materials until they are tested.
